Old, as in within the last decade. I’ve been re-watching Firefly, catching episodes I either missed or don’t remember. It is interesting to watch it with the Steampunk filter. I catch details I missed before. Also on deck has been Earth 2. Interestingly, it is another throwback to the American old west. A small group of people leave Earth to inhabit a new planet. They crash land and make a pilgrimmage to their original location. It comes across a lot like the Oregan Trail. Another smart series. Finally, I’ve been watching Threshold. Alien invasion. I missed it completely when it was first on. I can see why it wasn’t a huge hit - heavy on the science. But if you can keep up with the conversation, it is fascinating.

The touring company of Rent came through over the weekend, and I ended up with a free ticket. It was my first real exposure to the play, and while I enjoyed it, the cast seemed road weary. That aside, or perhaps because of that fact, I didn’t find any of it memorable. I kept comparing it to “I Am a Camera” by Christopher Isherwood. Maybe I’ll rent the movie to see how it comes across there.

Tonight I attend the reading by this semester’s writer-in-residence, Helen Humphreys. She read from her most recent published work, Wild Dogs. It was very lyrical, and it reminded me a great deal of Faulkner (who is one of her great influences). Based on the reading, I’m going pick up a copy of the book. She finished the evening with a few of her poems. I was very glad out went this evening, even though I missed the latest episode of Gilmore Girls.

I applied a new theme to the web site in honor of fall/Halloween.
